Grounds and Sounds welcomes Toby Tobias back to our stage. Toby left Johannesburg, South Africa, a city that ignited his passions but crushed the lives of his countrymen, for Jerusalem where he honed his talent and explored his ideals, before coming to New York to discover his true calling as an American songwriter and proud son of South Africa. Through his songs, Tobias shares his story of hope during a time of war and upheaval across three continents. Toby is a graduate of the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and has immersed himself in many genres of American Music while never leaving behind his roots in the rhythms and melodies of his homeland. Praise for Toby’s 2014 CD Africa You Belong to Me:
"Putting politics and the problems of Africa aside, this is a brilliantly put together album of quality musicianship and songs each with their own identity and style all from a man who has not forgotten his life and musical roots.” Rory Stanbridge, FATEA Magazine UK
"Tobias' palpable love of Africa informs the whole CD in a way that is powerful and moving. Though the album shows the traces of his musical background and influences - which is as it should be - it also sounds very fresh. That's a pretty rare achievement in music today." Rupert Wates, Singer-Songwriter
